From a saga of miscalculations made by collectors and museum alike, the show's organizers _ Colta Ives, curator of drawings and prints, and Susan Alyson Stein, assistant curator of European painting _ have shaped a shrewdly entertaining little visual essay on esthetic discrimination, one less about good painting versus bad than about how the collecting eye can be swayed by extravisual factors : an expert's say-so, period taste or plain old blind determination to have a work by Artist X at any cost.
