Formerly classified in the fungal order Lecanorales, phylogenetic analyses in 1998 showed that the Acarosporaceae belong outside this order; further analysis supported this conclusion.

A two-gene phylogeny shows the lichen genus " Niebla " ( Lecanorales ) is endemic to the New World and does not occur in Macaronesia nor in the Mediterranean basin.
