It is estimated that 50 % or more of schizophrenic patients present oneirophrenia at least once.

Oneirophrenia has some of the characteristics of simple schizophrenia, such as a dissociative symptoms which are typical of that disorder.

Persons affected by oneirophrenia have a feeling of dream-like derealization which, in its extreme form, may progress to delusions and hallucinations.

One of his last contributions to psychiatry was the study of confusional and dream-like states in psychoses ( oneirophrenia ) He was also a founder of the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and a President of the Society of Biological Psychiatry.

Scenic or " panoramic " hallucinations, which are not superimposed but vividly replace the entire visual field with hallucinatory content similarly to dreams; such scenic hallucinations may occur in epilepsy ( in which they are usually stereotyped and experimental in character ), hallucinogen use, ( cf . oneirophrenia ), mania, and brainstem lesions, among others.
