Even if it is so, the attempts are ging on and as per many projects for cleansing the rive , in Novemebr 2008, Indian government declared it as National river and the span fo ganges between Allahabad and Haldia (1600Kms) is declared are National waterway. फिर भी इसके प्रयत्न जारी हैं और सफ़ाई की अनेक परियोजनाओं के क्रम में नवंबर२००८ में भारत सरकार द्वारा इसे भारत की राष्ट्रीय नदी तथा इलाहाबाद और हल्दिया के बीच (१६०० किलोमीटर) गंगा नदी जलमार्ग- को राष्ट्रीय जलमार्ग घोषित किया है।
