The first modern jute mill was the Wellington Mills at Rishra , in Bengal , established in 1854 by George Acland , a coffee planter from Ceylon . पहली आधुनिक जूट मिल श्रीलंका के एक कॉफी उत्पादक , जार्ज आकलैंड द्वारा सन् 1854 में , बंगाल के रिशरा नामक स्थान पर स्थापित , वैलिंगटन जूट मिल के नाम से उभरी .

It not only allowed Europeans to engage in coffee cultivation , but also permitted them to hold lands for yearsa concession which was not allowed to any other class of planters . इसने कॉफी की खेती में यूरोपियनों को काम करने की अनुमति ही नहीं दी वरन् अनेक वर्षों तक भूमि अधिग्रहण की आज्ञा भी दे दी.इस प्रकार की छूट किसी अन्य वर्ग के बागान स्वामी को नहीं थी .

It inspired authors and political leaders to agitate against the , exploitation of the peasants by the European planters ; it culminated in the epic Champaran satyagraha launched by Mahatma Gandhi . इसने लेखकों और राजनैतिक नेताओं को यूरोपीय स्वामियों द्वारा किये गये किसानों के शोषण के विरूद्ध विद्रोह करने के लिए प्रेरित किया और इसकी परिणति महात्मा गांधी द्वारा संचालित विश्व प्रसिद्ध चंपारन सत्याग्रह में हुई .

In course of time , however , a new generation of settled labour came into existence ; there was a greater enlightenment on the part of the planters , and government legislation was more adequate and effective . समय बीतने पर , यद्यपि वऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-यवस्थित एवं आवासित श्रमिकों की एक नयी पीढऋई अस्तितऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-व में आयी , बागान की खामियों में भी एक नयी जागृति का आभास हुआ और सरकारी कानून भी अधिक प्रभावशाली और पर्यापऋ-ऊण्श्छ्ष्-त सिद्ध हुआ

Dutt wrote that the oppression of the indigo planters in Bengal continued for half a century until the people of Bengal rose and resisted ; and the cultivation of indigo by the European planters came to an end in most parts of Bengal after the indigo disturbances of 1859 . आर . सी . दत्त ने लिखा है कि बंगाल के नील उत्पादकों का शोषण आधी शताब्दी तक चलता रहा , जब तक कि बंगाल निवासियों ने एक जुट होकर इसका विरोध नहीं किया.सन् 1859 के नील उपद्रवों के बाद बंगाल के अनेक भागों में यूरोपियनों के द्वारा नील की खेती समाप्त हो गयी .
