The poetry and drama of this period retained something of the realis ic simplicity of the purely classical poetry of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , but at the same time the powerful imagination and passionate sensuousness of the age invested it with a lyrical romanticism . इस काल को नाटाकों और कविताओं ने रामायण और महाभारत की विशुद्ध शास्त्रीय काव्य की यथार्थवादी सादगी बनाये रखा किंतु इसके साथ ही युग , की प्रखर कल्पना तथा वासनामय विषयासक़्ति ने उसे गौतमय भावुकता प्रदान की .
