Sequoioideae and several other genera have been transferred from the former Taxodiaceae family to Cupressaceae based on DNA analysis.

Extant conifer families that flourished during the Jurassic included the Araucariaceae, Cephalotaxaceae, Pinaceae, Podocarpaceae, Taxaceae and Taxodiaceae.

However, recent research has shown that the Taxodiaceae, with the single exception of " Sciadopitys ", should be merged into the family Cupressaceae.
