He suddenly looked old and deserted to his son , worry made him seem shrunken and insignificant ; he was a tired old tailor , an unsuccessful little tradesman , living only for his nearest and dearest . He had a hard struggle not to run out there and then and weep on his father ' s shoulder . अचानक उस क्षण उसे अपने पिता अत्यन्त बूढ़े और अकेले - से जान पड़े , मानो फ़िक्र और परेशानी ने उन्हें एक़दम कृशकाय और तुच्छ बनाकर छोड़ दिया हो । एक वृद्ध थका - माँदा दर्ज़ी , असफल दुकानदार , जिसका समूचा जीवन अपने प्रिय सगे लोगों पर आधारित था । उसे लगा , जैसे अचानक भागता हुआ , वह अपने पिता के पास चला जाएगा और उनके कन्धों पर सिर टिकाकर रोने लगेगा ।

From the workshop next door came the sound of his father ' s voice , full of that embarrassing servility of a tradesman towards his customers that he hated to hear from his father . There were steps across the creaking floorboards and the thumping of a hissing iron . दरवाज़े के दूसरी ओर , वर्कशॉप में उसे अपने पिता का स्वर सुनाई दे रहा था - जिस तरह ग्राहकों से बातचीत करते समय दुकानदारों की आवाज़ कुछ - कुछ झिझकी - सी , सुशामद - भरी हो जाती है - कुछ वैसा ही लहजा उसके पिता अपने ग्राहकों से बात करते वक़्त अपना लेते थे । उसे बेहद चिढ़ होती है , बाबू के इस लहजे से । कभी - कभी लोगों की पदचाप - तले फर्श के तख़्ते चरमरा उठते थे और इस्त्री का सिरसिराता स्वर सुनाई दे जाता था ।
