Females are mostly brown, with strongly dark-spotted pale underparts ( less spotting in " L . d . gracilis " ) . zygodactylous ( two toes forwards, two toes backwards ).

The plate-billed mountain toucan is about 42 to 53 centimeters ( 16.5 to 21 inches ) in length, with a relatively lightweight zygodactylous, with two toes facing forward and two pointing back.

A quite similar group, the Zygodactylidae ( named for their zygodactylous approach to perching ) independently arose at much the same time and possibly from closely related ancestors in the landmasses bordering the North Atlantic, which at that time was only some two-thirds of its present width.
