The ideals and objectives of yesterday were still the ideals of today , but they had lost some of their lustre and even as one seemed to go towards them , they lost the shining beauty which had warmed the heart and vitalized the body . जो आदर्श और मकसद कल थे , वे आज के भी आदर्श थे , लेकिन उनका गौरव खत्म हो चुका था और ज़्यों ज़्यों कोई उनकी ओर जाता , उनका वह तेज गायब हो जाता जिससे हमारे दिलों में गर्मी पैदा होती और जो हमारे जिस्म को ताकत देता था .

You will not rejoice if a handful of Indians become high officers of the state or draw bigger dividends , and your miserable conditions remain , and your body breaks down through incessant toil and starvation and the lamp of your soul goes out . अगर हिंदुस्तान के मुट्ठी भर लोग सरकार में बड़े बड़े ओहदों पर आ जायें या उन्हें भारी डिवीडेंड मिलने लगे और आपकी तकलीफें बनी रहें , दिन-राम काम कर और भूखे रहकर अगर आपका जिस्म टूट जाये , आपकी आत्मा मर जाये तो आप कभी खुश नहीं होंगे .

A life-time of disciplined living and deliberate training of the mind and body to make them efficient instruments for the purpose I had in view , has thrown a hard shell over this turbulent mass and on the whole I feel fairly sure of myself . भावनाओं के इस समुद्र पर अनुशासन की जिंदगी और दिमाग और जिस्म की एक ऐसी पुख़्ता ट्रेनिंग ने बर्फ की जैसे एक सख़्त परत डाल दी है , जिससे उसका इस्तेमाल उस मकसद को पूरा करने के लिए किया जा सके जो मैंने सोच रखा है , और कुल मिलाकर मैं अपने आप को अब बिल्कुल महफूज समझता हूं .
