Nalini was a name always dear to his heart and somehow Mrinalini seemed to incorporate it . नलिनी , एक ऐसा नाम था , जो उन्हें बहुत ही प्रिय था और मृणालिनी ने कमोबेश इस नाम को चरितार्थ कर दिया था .

Then he realises that he had never ceased to love her and that it was this love that he was vainly seeking elsewhere . तब उसे पता चलता है कि उसने नलिनी को कभी प्यार करना नही छोड़ा और यही वह प्रेम था , जिसकी तलाश में वह इधर-उधर भटकता रहा था .

A restlessness seizes him , he leaves Nalini in search of what he himself does not know and wanders in the big world of men . एक तरह की बेचैनी उसे तंग करती रहती है , वह नलिनी को छोड़कर उस भीड़ भरी दुनिया में भटकता रहता है , किसलिए , यह उसे खुद नहीं मालूम .

When he returns , still disconsolate , he finds that Nalini , pining away in his absence , is on her death-bed . जब वह लौटता है , हालांकि अब भी वह निराश होता है तो यह पाता है कि नलिनी उसकी अनुपस्थिति में बुरी तरह छीज गई है और मृत्यु शय्या पर लेटी है .

The name he gave her was Nalini , the name of the imaginary sweetheart in his long narrative poem Kavi Kahini published earlier . रवीन्द्र ने उसे नलिनी का नाम दिया , अपनी कल्पना में बसनेवाली इस प्रेयसी को उन्होंने अपनी लंबी आख्यान कविता , ' कवि काहिनी ' में इसी नाम से पुकारा है , जो बहुत पहले प्रकाशित हुई थी .

The plot was familiar , a rehash of his earlier adolescent fancies centring round a lovely and true-hearted girl called Nalini . The drama was to be acted by the various members of the family and it was decided that each actor would be part-author and write his or her own part . इसकी कथावस्तु सुपरिचित थी और उनकी उस किशोर कल्पनाओं का ही पुनराख्यान , जिसमें एक प्यारी निश्छल हृदय-किशोरी नलिनी को केंद्र में रखकर इस नाटक के विभिन्न पात्रों की भूमिका में परिवार के सभी सदस्यों को सम्मिलित होना था- और यह तय किया गया कि हर सदस्य इसका खंड-लेखक होगा और अपनी भूमिका के अनुरूप अपने संवाद लिखकर लाएगा .
