Hutterer contributed the following sections to MSW3 : Order Erinaceomorpha and Order Soricomorpha.
2.
The order Erinaceomorpha contains a single family, Erinaceidae, which comprise the hedgehogs and gymnures.
3.
It is possibly the largest member of the order Erinaceomorpha, although the European hedgehog likely weighs a bit more at and up to.
4.
As of now, AFAIK, the hedgehogs and gymnures are placed in Erinaceomorpha ( Gregory, 1910 ), an order of their own.
5.
Erinaceidae ( hedgehogs ) was then also split off into a separate order ( Erinaceomorpha ) from the remainder ( termed Soricomorpha ), comprising the families Soricidae ( moles ), Solenodontidae, and Nesophontidae.
6.
Thus, Eulipotyphla comprises the hedgehogs and gymnures ( family Erinaceidae, formerly also the order Erinaceomorpha ), solenodons ( family Solenodontidae ), the desmans, shrew-like moles ( family Talpidae ) and true shrews ( family Soricidae ).
7.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, " E . europaeus " is probably the largest species of hedgehog and is possibly the heaviest member of the Erinaceomorpha order, although the moonrat ( " Echinosorex gymnura " ), similar in average mass if not known to equal to the hedgehog's maximum weight, can attain a considerably greater length.
