According to the 1911 census , there were forty-eight plantations , employing 13,500 workers , who were evenly spread out in the Madras Presidency , Burma and in Cochin and Travancore states . सन् 1911 की जनगणना के अनुसार उस समय 48 बागान थे जिनमें 13,500 श्रमिक काम करते थे और जो मद्रास प्रेसीडेंसी , बर्मा और त्रावणकोर-कोचीन रियासतों में समान रूप से फैले थे .

During the ' twenties my work was largely confined to my own province and I travelled extensively and intensively through the towns and villages of the forty-eight districts of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh , that heart of Hindustan as it has so long been considered , the seat and centre of both ancient and mediaeval civilization , the melting pot of so many races and cultures , th6 area where the great revolt of 1857 blazed up and was later ruthlessly crushed . सन् 1920 के बाद के कुछ सालों तक मेरा काम ज़्यादातर अपने ही सूबे तक महदूद रहा और मैं आगरा व अवध के संयुक़्त प्रांत के 48 जिलों में काफी दूर दूर तक और अंदरूनी हिस्सों में भी घूमा.यह बहुत जमाने से हिंदुस्तान का दिल , पुरानी और मध्ययुगीन दोनों ही संस्कृतियों का आधार , मरकज और अनेक जातियों और संस्कृतियों के आपस में समाहित होने का स्थल समझा जाता रहा है और यह वह क्षेत्र है , जहां 1857 का आंदोलन आग की तरह भड़का था और जो बाद में बेरहमी से कुचल डाला गया था .
